HPV Vaccine - Dubai Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic

What is the HPV Vaccine?

The HPV vaccine contains virus-like particles that consist of the main structural HPV-L1 protein but lack the viral genetic material, thus it is non-infectious. The vaccine stimulates the production of immunoglobulin G-type specific antibodies to prevent acquisition of type-specific HPV in the genital and vulvar areas.

Guidelines for Administration of HPV Vaccine:

  • HPV Vaccine (Gardacil, Cervarix) is given in three shots of 0.5 ml doses. First shot is followed by the second shot in 1-2 months, and then the third shot in 6 months after the first shot.
  • HPV Vaccine is recommended for all girls, 9 – 26 years old.
  • Testing for HPV is currently not recommended before vaccination.
  • HPV vaccine is not recommended for pregnant women, but it is safe for breastfeeding women.

Cervical cancer most commonly affects women in their mid or late twenties. So vaccinating girls before sexual exposure around this age can help in preventing this devastating cancer.

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is the cause of 99% of cervical cancer cases, with around 80% of these caused by HPV types 16 and 18. The HPV vaccine prevents HPV types 16 and 18 in up to 86% of individuals aged 16-21 years.

There are more than 100 types of HPV, with the most common being HPV 16 and 18. The HPV vaccine is the best way to prevent cervical diseases and provides protection against cervical cancer caused by HPV infection. The vaccine can be administered to individuals as young as 9 years old and up to 45 years of age, with the best time to give it being before becoming sexually active.

Two vaccines are available for protection against HPV infection: Cervarix (covering types 16 and 18), and Gardasil 4 (covering types 6, 11, 16, and 18). Gardasil 9, which covers a wider range of nine HPV types, is also available abroad.

How to Administer the Vaccine:

Typically, 2 to 3 doses are required. The second dose is usually given 6 to 12 months after the first dose, following the pattern of 0-1-6 months, or three doses at 0, 2, and 6 months, providing long-term protection for more than or equal to 4 years.
