Histological types of Cervical Carcinoma - Dubai Gynecology Clinic

Various Types of cervical cancer has been established based on the type of cell causing the cancer, and various treatment plan will apply accordingly.

1-Squamous cell carcinoma:

Approximately 70-75% of cervical carcinomas are squamous cell (outside layer of cells), which have been classified according to the cell type as; large cell non-keratinizing, large cell keratinizing and small cell carcinomas.

Verrucous squamous carcinoma:

• It is as a rare type associated to HPV 6.
• It is slow growing. Locally invasive.
• It is composed of well differentiated squamous cells with Frond-like papillae and little apparent stromal invasion.

• It has highly dysplastic squamous cells forming papillary fronds with thin fibro vascular core.
• The appearance may be warty and fungating.

• It is derived from the glandular cells of the cervix.
• It’s evidence has been rising especially in woman younger than 35 years of age.
• It might be diagnosed in advanced stage as it grows within the endocervical canal and the ectocervix appears in normal.  

 Adeno Malignum:

Adeno Malignum or minimal deviation adenocarcinoma. It occurs mainly in the fifth and sixth decade of life and it is well differentiated. Diagnosis require conization.   

 Adenoid cystic carcinoma:

it is considered the most aggressive.

• It is a mixture of malignant squamous and glandular cells.

• It should be distinguished from small cell squamous tumor.
• It has high frequency of lymphovascular invasion, lymph node metastasis and recurrence.
