This is either a simple outpatient procedure using a small plastic tube introduced into the uterine cavity (pipelle biopsy) to get endometrial tissue and send for cytology analysis. It is done without anesthesia. No analgesia is required.

It is also done as part of hysteroscopy procedure done as a targeted biopsy or endometrial sampling. During hysteroscopy, endometrial findings are noted and any abnormal-looking area is biopsied.

The lining of the uterus (endometrium) is the place where pregnancy get implanted.

This lining sheds off every menstrual period as menstrual bleed. When it is too thick, it causes heavy periods and extra bleeding. It gets atrophic and becomes very thin after menopause, so it never bleeds again.

Thick endometrium or lining of uterus can be due to:

• Hormonal imbalance, especially in perimenopausal woman.
• Endometrial hyperplasia which can be pre-malignant condition, especially in diabetic or PCOD patients.
• Endometrial polyps or submucous fibroids.
• Infection (endometritis).
• Postmenopausal bleeding is always alarming and needs to be checked for any malignant cells or endometrial carcinoma.
