Arrhythmia

What is a benign arrhythmia?

Arrhythmia is an irregularity of heartbeat that does not bother you symptomatically or affect your hemodynamic and has no prognostic significance. There are three types:

  1. Sinus arrhythmia is called respiratory arrhythmia, so the heart rate increases when you take deep breaths and falls when you breathe out in a cyclical manner. We see that rhythm on an ECG accidentally, and it is not harmful.
  2. An isolated atrial ectopic beat, which originated from the atria, the upper part of the heart, you may feel a drop beat or may not. It does not usually need treatment.
  3. Infrequent ventricular ectopic beat, which is the most common arrhythmia, may occur in people with or without heart disease. The main causes are:

Stress, caffeine, nicotine,,,,, heart disease, or electrolyte imbalance.

The infrequent PVCs do not need specific treatment, just to avoid smoking and stress, and caffeine, whereas very frequent ventricular ectopics need medical investigation to know exactly what is going on and what should be done to protect you from any serious situation.

What are the basic causes of arrhythmia?

There are three main causes for arrhythmia:

  • Coronary artery disease, including ischemia (angina) or heart attack.
  • Electrolyte imbalance, especially sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
  • Heart muscle disease, cardiomyopathy, heart failure, ventricular aneurysm.
