DRHC Dubai Spinal Surgery

What to expect after having A Full Endoscopic Discectomy surgery?

Hospital Stay: Not Needed!

Full Endoscopic Discectomy is a day-case surgery in which patients can be discharged the same day.

Pain Control:

Pain Management

  • The surgical area could feel uncomfortable.
  • Analgesics, muscle relaxants, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be recommended by your doctor.
  • Your leg could experience temporary numbness and weakness as a result of the local anesthetic used during surgery. The first post-op day is typically when this starts to get better.
  • When the anesthetic wears off, you might feel pain when the sensation returns in the same or a different area. Some nerve discomfort is normal after surgery, depending on the results, especially if the herniated disc had to be separated from the irritated nerve or if an inflammatory membrane had to be removed.
  • Surgical recovery may result in muscle spasms.
  • Treatment options for this condition include medication or spinal blocks.
  • If dysesthesia does develop, it typically goes away within a week to several months. It may occasionally be longer.

How aggressively a condition is treated depends on how severe it is. If the condition is severe, foraminal epidural blocks, sympathetic blocks, and medication are typically used to treat it aggressively. If this occurs, you need to speak with experts right away so that it can be properly treated and fixed.

Diet:

  1. Stick to your regular diet.
  2. You may eat after you have left the surgical facility.

Hygiene:

  • Showering is permitted 1-3 days after surgery.
  • No hot tubs or tub baths for about a week, or until the wound is dry and healed.

Activities Of Daily Living:

  • On the evening of surgery, light activities may be resumed.
  • During the first few days, assistance with food preparation, lifting, and cleaning may be required.

Post-Operative Recovery:

The Initial Postoperative Week
  1. Moderate activities with breaks as needed.
  2. No sexual relations until you are fully recovered.
  3. No bending, twisting, or lifting.
  4. No more than 5 to 15 pounds of lifting after 1 week; no more than 25 pounds of lifting for 6 weeks.
  5. You may return to work within 1 to 4 weeks of surgery, or as soon as you are able.
  6. You may resume driving one to two weeks after surgery, or sooner if you are able to do so safely. Remember to maintain neutral positioning and do not slouch.

What conditions might require a FED?

  • Cauda Equina Syndrome occurs when there is severe pressure on the nerves in the lumbar area, resulting in loss of sensation in the private area as well as disturbed bladder and bowel function.
  • Significant neurological deficit in the lower extremities, particularly motor power.
  • Sensation loss in a portion of the leg. This can be a relative indication for surgery, but if it is associated with positive straight leg raising and big disc prolapse, I would recommend surgery because a better prognosis is expected.
  • Uncontrolled severe pain in the lower back.
  • A positive straight leg raising is a sign of sciatic nerve tension.
  • The size of the disc herniation is moderate to large.
