Bakers Cyst Treatment - Dubai Orthopedic Clinic

Bakers Cyst:

Baker’s cyst is an accumulation of fluid in the posterior aspect of the knee or what you call the “Popliteal Fossa.” As a result of leakage of fluid inside the knee joint in a one-way valve situation, gradually, the fluid may accumulate and will cause pressure in the surrounding structure including tendons, nerves, arteries, and the knee itself causing a raised intra-articular pressure and therefore, pain.

Baker cysts can be a source of discomfort and pain, affecting your daily activities. Fortunately, at Dr. Rami Hamed Center in Dubai, we offer specialized and comprehensive treatment options for baker cysts.

Why it Occurs?

A Baker's cyst, also known as a popliteal cyst, occurs when excess synovial fluid accumulates behind the knee joint, leading to the formation of a fluid-filled sac or cyst. This condition often develops as a result of underlying issues within the knee joint, such as:

  1. Knee Joint Injuries: Trauma or injury to the knee, such as a meniscal tear or cartilage damage, can cause inflammation within the joint, leading to increased production of synovial fluid and subsequent cyst formation.

  2. Arthritis: Conditions like osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis can result in inflammation of the knee joint lining (synovium), leading to excess fluid production and the development of a Baker's cyst.

  3. Other Knee Conditions: Various knee conditions, such as torn ligaments (e.g., ACL tear), cartilage degeneration, or knee joint infections, can contribute to the development of a Baker's cyst.

  4. Age and Activity Level: Older individuals and those who engage in activities that place repetitive stress on the knee joint may be at a higher risk of developing Baker's cysts due to increased wear and tear on the joint.

Overall, a Baker's cyst occurs as a result of underlying knee joint issues that lead to increased synovial fluid production and accumulation, ultimately forming a cyst behind the knee.

Bakers cyst treatment:

A Baker’s cyst is a benign condition and sometimes, we can leave it alone if it is not symptomatic sometimes, if it is large and causes pressure symptoms, we may aspirate it under ultrasound guidance to reduce the pressure. We have to think that Baker’s cyst will reoccur after any aspiration and surgery is not generally recommended as the recurrence rate is high; however, we may consider surgery if all the conservative management has failed on many occasions and is causing a problem to the patient. The surgery is usually done through a posterior approach when the cyst is dissected from the surrounding tissue and excised in full.

While non-surgical treatments can often provide relief for baker cysts, there are cases where surgical intervention becomes necessary. Baker cyst surgery is considered when conservative methods have not effectively managed the symptoms or when the cyst is causing persistent discomfort.

At Dr. Rami Hamed Center in Dubai, our experienced orthopedic surgeons specialize in performing baker cyst surgery with precision and care. We understand the importance of providing comprehensive treatment options, including surgical interventions, to ensure the best outcomes for our patients.
