Meniscus Tear - Dubai Orthopedic Clinic

Meniscus Tear:

A meniscus tear is a common knee injury that can cause discomfort and hinder mobility. The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage in your knee that acts as a cushion between your shinbone and thighbone. A meniscus tear occurs when this cartilage gets damaged, often due to sudden twisting or rotating movements. This injury is particularly common among athletes and older adults.

Meniscus Tear Symptoms:

The indications and symptoms associated with meniscus tears typically appear immediately following the injury and can worsen gradually. These include:

  • Pain triggered by rotational knee movements
  • Swelling and a sensation of popping
  • A feeling of the knee being locked when attempting to mobilize it
  • Impaired walking ability.

It's important to remember that not everyone experiences the same symptoms, and a thorough examination by an orthopedic specialist is necessary for accurate diagnosis.

Causes of Meniscus Tear:

A meniscus tear frequently occurs due to activities that produce sudden knee twisting or rotation, like quick directional shifts while running. Athletes engaging in contact sports like football, tennis, and basketball commonly encounter this scenario. Additionally, meniscus tears can arise among older individuals due to degenerative knee alterations.

Meniscus Tear Advanced Treatment:

Once the meniscus tear is confirmed by an MRI scan, it is essential to consider a repair in the meniscus as soon as possible as any delay in healing may adversely affect the whole healing process considering that the menisci have poor blood supply and are required to be repaired as soon as possible. Certain tears are not eligible for a repair in any way as they are known to fail in any respect while some certain tears are considered to be ideal for repair and every surgeon would attempt his best to preserve the meniscus structure as this is very important for conforming forces between the tibia and femur. The meniscus repair technique has advanced significantly over the last 5 years with a huge variety of instrumentation allowing the process to be done within 5-10 minutes at maximum using the arthroscopic technique. In old times, we had to spend around 45 minutes to put a decent suture in the meniscus but the current advanced arthroscopic technique allows it to be done within 5 minutes or less. Once the meniscus is repaired, the sutures will remain in place as this is usually permanent. Sometimes, the meniscus does not heal as there is no blood supply to it but the suture will continue to hold the meniscus in place for maybe forever. If not the patient may have to re-consider further surgery after several years in case the meniscus continues to cause any mechanical problems.

When dealing with a meniscus tear, Consulting an experienced orthopedic surgeon is necessary to diagnose the extent of the tear and recommend the most suitable treatment plan.
