Clubfoot Treatment - DRHC Dubai Pediatric Orthopedic Clinic

Congenital talipes equinovarus, commonly known as clubfoot, presents a significant challenge for orthopedic surgeons due to its congenital nature. It affects both boys and girls, with approximately 50% of cases being bilateral and 25% having a family history. Additionally, 20% of cases are associated with other musculoskeletal deformities.

Complex Deformity and Treatment Approach: Clubfoot is characterized by a complex deformity involving equinus, varus, cavus, and adduction across all parts of the foot. At DRHC Dubai Pediatric Orthopedic Clinic, we employ the renowned Ponseti technique as the primary treatment method for clubfoot. This approach consists of two phases: correction of the deformity through manipulation and casting, followed by maintenance with braces to prevent recurrence.

Ponseti Technique: Treatment with the Ponseti technique can commence as early as the first week after birth. Through careful manipulation and weekly casting, we gradually correct the deformity. In approximately 95% of cases, a percutaneous Achilles tenotomy may be required during the 4th or 5th cast to address residual equinus.Clubfoot - DRHC Dubai Pedaitric Orthopedic Clinic

Orthotic Maintenance: Following the removal of the final cast, we utilize a Dennis Brown splint for 23 hours per day for the first three months, gradually transitioning to nighttime wear for up to four years. Custom-made clubfoot shoes are also provided to support walking and further maintain correction.

High Success Rates with Non-Surgical Approach: By implementing the Ponseti technique, our experienced team achieves satisfactory results in approximately 80% of clubfoot cases, significantly reducing the need for open surgical intervention to only 5% of cases. This non-surgical approach ensures optimal outcomes while minimizing invasiveness and recovery time.
