Hip Fracture - DRHC Dubai Fracture Clinic

Introduction:

All There Is To Know About This Common Orthopaedic Condition

  • It is a well known fact that the hip is a ball and socket joint that is responsible for the bending and rotational movement of the upper leg at the pelvis.
  • However, contrary to the popular belief, not all fractures occurring in this joint can be categorized as hip fracture. Rather the term is used specifically for a fracture that occurs in the upper quarter of the femur or thigh bone.
  • A hip fracture is a serious orthopaedic condition, irrespective of the age and other medical history of the patients.

Types of Hip Fracture:

A hip fracture can be classified into following three main types depending on the exact location where the bone is broken.

  • Femoral neck fracture: This type of fracture is located just 1or 2 inches away from where the head of the femoral bone meets the socket. In most cases it might led to the obstruction of blood flow to the ball of the hip resulting from the tearing of blood vessels.
  • Intertrochanteric hip fracture: This type of fracture is located farther away from the joint at a distance of about 3 or 4 inches. It generally causes damage only to the bone without stopping the blood flow to the femur.
  • Intracapsular fracture: This fracture actually affects the ball and socket part of the hip and hence is often the most complicated type. It can also lead to the tearing of blood vessels which in turn causes obstruction of blood flow to the femur.

Diagnosing the condition:

The most common method used by the doctors for the diagnosis of hip fracture is to get the area x-rayed. However, before advising and x-ray, the doctors might also consider the following fractured hip symptoms that are quite common amongst most patients.

  • Severe pain in the hip and groin area
  • Inability to walk or put weight or pressure on the affected hip and leg
  • Inflammation and bruising of the hip

Treatment Options:

  • Hip fracture is not like any other fracture and hence its treatment is also quite different. The doctors generally consider various factors such as the age of the patient the hip fracture classification and the extent of damage while suggesting the best treatment option.

Non-Surgical Treatment

In the case of minor or hairline fractures, the option of surgery is generally avoided. Doctors rely mostly on a combination of physical therapy and medication to treat the condition. This approach allows the fracture to heal naturally while minimizing pain and discomfort.

Surgical Treatment

If the fracture is complex with multiple areas of damage, then hip fracture surgery might be the most feasible and effective way of treating the condition. Surgical intervention ensures proper alignment of the fractured bones, enabling faster and more efficient healing.

Hip Replacement Surgery

In some cases, the nature and extent of the hip fracture may necessitate partial or total hip replacement surgery. This is typically considered for patients with severe hip fractures that result in significant damage to the hip joint, making repair unfeasible.

Partial Hip Replacement: Also known as hip hemiarthroplasty, this procedure involves replacing only the femoral head (the ball part of the ball-and-socket hip joint) with a prosthetic implant. This is typically considered for older patients with fractures that occur at the neck of the femur.

Total Hip Replacement: This procedure involves replacing both the femoral head and the acetabulum (the socket part of the hip joint) with prosthetic implants. Total hip replacement is typically considered for patients with complex fractures involving the hip joint or for patients with pre-existing conditions such as osteoarthritis.

By understanding the complexities of hip fractures, we can better tailor treatments to each patient’s unique needs and improve their quality of life. For more information about hip fractures and their treatment options, please do not hesitate to contact us.
