Nodules in the thyroid gland are a very common thyroid disorder. Nodules are usually evaluated with a fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Most thyroid nodules are benign (noncancerous) and do not require any procedure, while cancerous or suspicious nodules are removed by surgery.
However, some thyroid nodules are associated with pressure symptoms, difficulty swallowing, or cosmetic disorders that might require surgery. Recently, the laser nodule ablation technique is a new minimally invasive treatment that results in nodules shrinking by applying a laser energy beam over the nodule tissue.
Laser thyroid treatment is considered a safe and effective non-surgical procedure for the treatment of symptomatic benign thyroid nodules.
As a result of this procedure, nodule shrinkage about 70-80% after one year of thyroid nodule laser treatment. fine-needle aspiration biopsy with ultrasound guidance should be performed before starting of this treatment to confirm the benign nature of the targeted nodule (a few centers prefer to do it twice before laser treatment).
According to recent studies, about 83% of the nodules were treated with a single session of laser treatment, 13% were treated with two sessions of laser treatment and 3% required 3 sessions.
