Thyroid Cancer

A Thyroid Cancer (malignant) tumor is a growth of tissue made up of cancer cells to make thyroid mass or diffused to the next organs around the thyroid gland especially to neck lymph nodes which continue to multiply.

Types of thyroid cancer:

There are four types:

1. Papillary cancer is the best and most common and we can diagnose it through simple investigations
2. Follicular. Less common need more investigations to diagnose and in treatment like papillary.
3. Medullary this is rare and almost companies with a family history and multiple endocrine tumors.
4. Anaplastic is also not common and we see in elderly people quickly spreads and is difficult to treat.

What are the signs and symptoms of thyroid cancer?

Usually, no complaints or more signs and symptoms but if the patient sees one of :

1. Any swelling in the neck or the thyroid gland.
2. difficult in swallowing or breathing
3. change in voice tone

How can diagnose thyroid cancer and what is the investigation assessed?

• Examination by an experienced surgeon
• Neck ultrasound: to show there are nodules or cysts in the gland
• Fine needle aspiration (FNA): a simple procedure we can do in our clinic and we get some thyroid cells (no need for anesthesia).
• thyroid radioisotope scan
• Sometimes we need MR

What are the treatment options?

• Surgery.
• radioactive iodine
• radiotherapy
• Chemotherapy

Surgery:

The most common way to treat thyroid cancer is to do a total thyroidectomy (remove all glands) or subtotal thyroidectomy(remove part of the gland) the results are very good with early-stage and papillar types. 

Follow-up:

• All patients need to follow –up after treatment, especially after surgery
• Should be doing, Blood investigations as thyroglobulin and thyroid hormone if we remove part of the gland.
• You may also have radioactive iodine scans, to ensure there are no thyroid cancer cells spread away
• Repeat CT for chest and neck every year
