Definition: Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulations that are dangerous to one's health.

Measurement:

1. The first step to determine the degree of obesity is calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI)

   BMI = body weight (in kg) ÷ height (in meters) squared

   Underweight – <18.5 kg/m²

   Normal weight – ≥18.5 to 24.9 kg/m²

   Overweight – ≥25.0 to 29.9 kg/m²

   Obesity – ≥30 kg/m^2:

   > Class I – 30.0 to 34.9 kg/m²

   > Class II – 35.0 to 39.9 kg/m²

   > Class III – ≥40 kg/m²

2. In addition to measuring BMI, waist circumference should be measured to assess for abdominal obesity.
   A waist circumference of ≥102 cm for males and ≥88 cm for females is considered elevated.

Causes and risk factors:

• Lifestyle: energy intake exceeding energy expenditure, sedentary lifestyle, physical inactivity, short sleep duration, smoking cessation
• Excessive weight gain during pregnancy
• Medications associated with weight gain: antipsychotic agents, antidepressants, corticosteroids, oral antidiabetic agents such as sulfonylureas, meglitinides and thiazolidinediones, and insulin therapy.
