Umbilical hernia is a bulge that appears at the umbilicus (navel). It varies from a pea size up to the size of a small plum. This is one of the most common pediatric surgical conditions that affects 1 in every 5 children. This is not usually painful and increases its size every time the child cries or strains. 80% of most cases closes at 3 years.

Surgery needed if:

• It is still open at the age of 3-4 years.
• The presence of pain in the hernia is associated with vomiting or constipation (urgent surgical opinion).

It is a simple procedure to close the umbilical orifice with absorbable suture, and it can be done as a day-case surgery, with minimum discomfort and a very low rate of complications

When should you call your doctor after hernia repair

Generally, contact the surgeon or visit the hospital if:

• The child develops a fever.
• Vomiting and ongoing pain.
• The wound appears red, swollen, or is leaking fluid.
