What should I expect after the ureteroscopy?

Since you will be asleep during the procedure, you must arrange transportation to your home.

During the first two days after the procedure, the doctor may prescribe antibiotic treatment to prevent infection. Signs of infection include fever, chills, and worsening pain. Tell your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms.

Most ureteroscopy patients have mild to moderate pain that can be controlled with medication. For mild pain relief:

  You should drink two 8-ounce glasses of water every hour for two hours after the procedure.
  • With the doctor's permission, you can take a warm bath to relieve pain.

  Ice packs or kidney heating pads can help with pain.

Other side effects are kidney and bladder spasms or a burning sensation when urinating. Urine may appear pink or red (a sign of drinking more fluids). These symptoms may last until the stent is removed.
