Blepharitis - Dubai Eye Clinic

Blepharitis (EyeLid inflammation):

Blepharitis is a common eye condition that involves inflammation of the meibomian glands of the eyelids. This leads to redness and crusts of the eyelid. It can affect people of all ages and is often caused by a combination of factors, such as bacteria, skin conditions, or even allergies.

Types of Blepharitis:

Anterior blepharitis: it affects the front edge of the eyelids. This type is often caused by bacteria which causes dandruff-like flakes on the lashes. It can lead to redness, itching, and even crusting along the lash line.

Posterior blepharitis:  affects the inner edge of the eyelids where they come into contact with your eyeballs. It is commonly associated with the dysfunction of tiny oil glands in this area, leading to dry eyes, irritation, and a gritty sensation.

Mixed blepharitis: a combination of both anterior and posterior forms. This can occur when there are multiple factors contributing to eyelid inflammation. Identifying this type is crucial for your Eye Doctor developing an effective treatment plan.

Seborrheic blepharitis is linked to seborrheic dermatitis - a skin condition characterized by oily skin and dandruff. This type often presents with greasy scales or crusts on the eyelids along with redness and discomfort.

Symptoms of Blepharitis:

  • Swollen eyelids or greasy eyelids.
  • Red, irritated eyes that itch or burn.
  • Blurring and light sensitivity
  • Crusting of eyelashes that causes sticky lashes.
  • Trichiasis (inward growth of lashes)
  • Dry eye or excessive tearing.
  • Excessive blinking.
  • Loss of eyelashes.

How to Prevent Blepharitis:

  • Avoid or change the type of eye makeup to reduce irritation to your lids.
  • Use warm compresses: With a clean piece of cloth soaked with warm water
  • Take omega-3s: Some studies have found that omega-3s, will help the glands in your eyes work better.
  • Lid scrubs: Use a piece of clean cloth to wash each eyelid. Mix a solution of 50% baby shampoo and 50% warm water. Close the eye you’re cleansing and rub the washcloth over the lashes and lid margins several times.
