Cataract Treatment and Surgery Options - Dubai Eye Clinic

What is a Cataract:

A cataract is an opacity in your clear crystalline lens that forms due to protein changes leading to cloudy vision.

By reducing your vision, a cataract usually interferes with your daily activities like driving, reading, and working.

Causes of Cataract:

•Genetic
•Age related
•Factors like smoking and alcohol.
•High blood pressure and high blood sugar
•Medication as steroids

It's important to be aware of the signs of cataracts, as early detection of a Cataract can lead to timely treatment and better outcomes.

If you are a patient with any of the previously mentioned factors, we strongly recommend you book an appointment, so you can get checked by our highly qualified doctors.

Symptoms of Cataract:

Symptoms can vary depending on how severe the cataract is but usually include:
•Vision changes like blurry vision or frequent change of glasses
•Glare when staring at the light
•Difficulty seeing in dim light

How to treat a Cataract:

Sadly, there is no cure for cataracts, but there is treatment by cataract surgery which is very common and extremely safe. Cataract removal surgery is done by local anesthesia and on a daycare basis.

At our clinic, we believe that good communication and information can lead to better patient understanding of the procedure, greater patient confidence, and less anxiety

Our department promises to get excellent results after cataract surgery that will not only restore your vision but also restore the quality of your life.

Different Types of Cataract Surgeries:

Phacoemulsification:

A modern approach to cataract surgery, using high-frequency ultrasound breaks up cataracts into small pieces. This ultrasound is delivered through a special handpiece (probe) that carefully separates and dissolves the lens. Once the lens has been broken, the pieces are removed from the eye by the surgeon through gentle suction.
The doctor will then insert a specially designed implant, which is called an intraocular lens (IOL), placing it where the natural lens used to be.
The surgeon then closes incisions that were made at the beginning of the procedure using a tiny amount of saline to swell the surrounding cornea and seal the opening.
Because the incision is so small, there’s no need for any stitches, it is a fast procedure that usually does not take more than 15 minutes. Eye drops and a protective shield are given to help the recovery process.

Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS)

A superior procedure where the laser is used to replace certain manual steps done in the phacoemulsification procedure including initial incisions, opening the lens capsule, and dissecting the lens.
The laser option will be more expensive.
There is evidence that FLACS can be better for advanced, mature cataracts, resulting in lower phacoemulsification energy used.
However, it is important to highlight that studies have not yet consistently shown that FLACS results in fewer complications, faster recovery, or better visual outcomes than traditional cataract surgery.

Extracapsular Cataract Extraction Surgery (ECCE)

In cases of very hard dense cataract, where ultrasound is unlikely to break down the cataracts our surgeon recommend extracapsular surgery.
A small incision is made by the surgeon at the outer edges of the cornea. The surgeon carefully opens the front of the capsule that holds the lens in place. The lens is usually removed in one piece without fragmentation, but suction can be used to remove any smaller pieces.

Intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE)

This technique is a variation of extracapsular but with making a larger incision. Used for patients with cataracts caused by eye trauma.
