Laser and Refractive Surgery- Dubai Laser Eye Clinic

Tired of wearing glasses or changing contact lenses?

We have the most recent and safest techniques/procedures that our doctors are currently using to eliminate the errors of refraction. These errors include myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.

There are two types of refractive surgeries, The decision of which will be done depends on the preoperative assessment and investigations that our doctors will do for you prior to the procedure.

The first technique is using an excimer laser to modify your corneal curvature (reshaping of the cornea) and hence fix the error of refraction. The second is done using intraocular lens implantation.

Stay reassured that our doctor will take the right decision for you and for your eye health.

Femto Lasik /Lasik

Lasik is a commonly performed eye procedure that reduces your dependency on glasses or contact lenses for the correction of myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism. Lasik permanently changes the curve of your cornea, which is the clear covering of the front of your eyes, using an excimer laser beam.

About the Procedure :

Luckily it is an outpatient procedure that requires around 15 minutes, done with topical anesthetic eye drops. A lid speculum will be applied to keep your eyes open. You will be asked to fix your eyes centrally and just relax while the doctor is making a flap in your cornea which will be followed by pulses of excimer laser applied to the underlying surface to reshape your corneal surface and correct the error of refraction. The good news is that no stitches are required to fix the flap later as it heals spontaneously.

Am I a good candidate?:

If you are

1) 18 years old or above

2) No recent frequent change of your glasses or contact lenses,

3) not taking any medications that might delay the healing process like steroids

4) not suffering from any eye disease which can be a contraindication such as previous eye injury or glaucoma. Then, you would absolutely be an ideal candidate and eligible for the Lasik procedure.

Are there possible complications?:

Dry eye is very common after the procedure, which is why tear substitutes are prescribed postoperatively. You may also notice within the first couple of days after Lasik an increase in light sensitivity or halos around the light. However, our Eye Care Specialists reassure you that it is a matter of a few days and all symptoms will resolve.

Phakic IOL (intraocular lens)

Phakic IOL, also called ICL, are safe and effective implantable contact lenses that are placed over your crystalline lens and allow you to get rid of your glasses.
They are made of purified collagen polymer that is highly compatible when implanted inside your eyes and does not cause any reaction.

Who are the candidates for Phakic IOL?

Any patient with a very high error of refraction or thin corneal surface is not an eligible candidate for LASIK or PRK procedures.

Pre-operative Phakic IOL :

First, you should be examined by the eye doctor on a slit lamp, then measurements (curvature, thickness, and space inside the eye) are done to decide the power of the implanted lens.

We can easily calculate your lens power in our eye clinic using high-technology medical equipment.

About the Phakic IOL procedure:

It is a very simple and quick procedure done with topical or local anesthesia. A very small incision of about 2.8 mm is created through the lens implanted inside your eye.
Although many patients think the wound will be closed by sutures, fortunately, it is not, instead it is a self-healing process. Hence the patients are not allowed to rub their eyes for a few weeks after the procedure.
One of the most commonly asked questions is, will the lens be visible? No, it is a transparent lens that is implanted over your crystalline lens and is not visible.

Postoperative Phakic IOL :

  • The doctor will prescribe you the treatment drops and pain medications
  • You may feel a bit blurry directly after surgery which may last for a few days
  • You may notice pink eye, light sensitivity, and a burning sensation in the eye
  • Fortunately, all these symptoms will disappear within the first 2-4 weeks after surgery
