Pterygium - Dubai Eye Clinic

What is Pterygium (Surfer’s eye):

  • Pterygium is a raised, fleshy growth on the conjunctiva encroaching on the cornea. Conjunctiva is the clear membrane that covers the white of your eye.
  • The nickname “surfer’s eye” comes from the idea that surfers work in the sun, wind, and dusty conditions which causes pterygium.

Causes of Pterygium:

A long time outdoors in the sun and dust entering the eyes when not protected

Symptoms of Pterygium:

  • Redness and swelling of the conjunctiva.
  • Dry, itchy, burning eyes.
  • Blurry vision

How to Prevent Pterygium :

  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light
  • Use artificial tears when your eyes are dry

Treatment of Pterygium :

  • We treat redness, swelling, and discomfort with steroid and lubricating eye drops (symptomatic treatment)
  • If the pterygium grows large enough to cause more problems, it should be surgically removed.
