Stretta Treatment in Dubai at DRHC

The Stretta treatment is a safe, non-invasive procedure, to reshape the opening between the stomach and esophagus to relieve the symptoms of GERD, by restoring the barrier between the stomach and esophagus, thus preventing the acid from entering the esophagus and causing GERD symptoms.

What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common chronic digestive diseases, associated with a wide range of symptoms, typically heartburn, acid regurgitation, and dysphagia, while severely impairing health-related quality of life (HRQL)

It happens when the stomach acid and/or stomach content go back up into the throat, that's why it's called acid reflux, and over time it can damage the lining of the esophagus.

Complaints from GERD:

  • Sour taste in the mouth
  • Chest pain
  • Problems with swallowing
  • Dry cough
  • Sore throat
  • Hoarseness when speaking
  • Feeling a lump in your throat

After swallowing, the muscles of the esophageal-gastric junction relax to allow food and liquids to enter the stomach. Then these muscles tighten and close again until the next swallow. It’s when these muscles weaken or relax abnormally that acid reflux can occur.

How Stretta helps:

Being a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure, Stretta is considered a Day Case procedure that only takes about an hour to be performed and allows you to return to your normal activities within a day.

Because most GERD patients suffer from damage to the muscles that connect the esophagus to the stomach, the Stretta procedure helps strengthen these muscles, which results in better muscle control and fewer acid reflux episodes.

Despite the availability of other treatments for GERD (antacids, PPIs, and other medications with lifestyle changes, and also surgery), the Stretta procedure is considered to be more efficient than normal treatments, and of course, a non-surgical one.

  • Patients who suffer from failure of medical treatment
  • Patients who aren’t good candidates for Surgical Treatments.
  • Patients with no strictures or stenosis, and no large hiatal hernia (>2cm).

  • You shouldn't eat or drink anything after midnight on the day before the procedure.
  • You can take your normal medications during the morning of the procedure with small sips of water, EXCEPT for any diuretics or insulin, or other diabetic medications.
  • You'll have to bring your daily medications with you to the procedure.
  • You'll have to stop any blood thinner medications three to five days before the procedure.
  • You should wear a loose-fitting type of clothing on the day of your procedure.
  • Due to sedation, you'll have to arrange a ride home on the day of the procedure.

The Process:

  • The procedure lasts for about 60 minutes, and it’s done with anesthesia. During the procedure the doctor will insert a tube down the throat to the muscles that connect the esophagus to the stomach, then, the tube sends mild radio waves to the tissue where the esophagus joins the stomach, and at the same time, it releases water to help prevent any heat injury to the tissues.
  • After that, the doctor will remove the tube after the application of the radio waves, and then you will be woken up from the anesthesia.

The Stretta procedure is completely safe, with very few rate of documented complications.

After resting on the day of the procedure:

  • You'll be able to go on with your daily activities on the day after the procedure.
  • You'll notice a progressive reduction of your GERD symptoms during the first week after the procedure and you'll not suffer these symptoms again for up to 10 years after that.
  • You'll be able to reduce and even stop the usage of anti-reflux medications.
  • You can do the Stretta procedure again in case the symptoms recur, as studies showed that Sretta is a safe procedure that can be repeated.
