Adrenal Disorder Treatment - Dubai Endocrinology Clinic

What are Adrenal Disorders?

Each person has 2 adrenal glands located above each of their kidneys. They serve to regulate various body functions by releasing hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Cortisol is vital in regulating metabolism and controlling blood sugar whilst adrenaline is responsible for triggering your stress ‘fight for flight’ response.

Adrenal disorders affect the function of the adrenal glands, either by making too much or too little of the hormone. There are many different adrenal disorders and they are usually caused by tumors, infections, and inheritance (congenital). As a result, patient symptoms often vary and treatment is specific to the adrenal disorder of the patient.

At our Dubai Endocrinology Clinic, under the expert care of the renowned Endocrinology Specialist, you can find the most effective and compassionate treatment for adrenal disorders These conditions affect the adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing essential hormones like cortisol and aldosterone.

Addison’s Disease (Adrenal Insufficiency):

Adisson’s Disease is characterized by the adrenal glands not producing enough of the hormone cortisol, and sometimes aldosterone. Symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, decrease in blood pressure, and darkened skin. Treatment of Addison’s disease is usually done through hormone replacement therapy.

Cushing’s Syndrome:

Cushing Syndrome is caused by an excessive production of cortisol, reaching very high levels. This could be due to increased production by the adrenal glands or by the use of steroid medicine.

Common symptoms include weight gain, increased blood pressure, muscle weakness, and frequent bruising. For treatment, the doctor may reduce your steroid medication or do surgery to remove an adrenal tumor, depending on the case.

Hyperaldosteronism:

Hyperaldosteronism means increased levels of aldosterone in the body, leading to high blood pressure and potassium loss. It can be Primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome), to do with the adrenal glands, or Secondary hyperaldosteronism, caused by an issue elsewhere in the body.

It commonly affects adults between 30 to 50 years old, and more females than males. Treatment will depend on the individual case, and whether it's primary or secondary. This could include surgery, medicine, or lifestyle changes.

Pheochromocytoma (Adrenal Tumor):

It is a rare condition where an adrenal tumor causes excess adrenaline and no adrenaline. This leads to increased blood pressure, palpitations, panic attacks, and anxiety. The primary treatment for pheochromocytoma is through surgical removal of the tumor.

Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH):

This is a genetic condition that decreases the adrenal gland’s production of cortisol and other hormones. CAH often leads to hormonal imbalances and genital abnormalities. Treatment is usually done by hormone replacement therapy, but in some cases, surgery is done.
