Rectal bleeding occurs when there is bleeding coming out from the anus.
Blood can be bright red or dark brown, and can be seen only on the toilet paper or in the toilet or surrounding the faces.
Usually, when blood is red, it comes from the lower part of the intestine (rectum, anal canal), on the contrary, when is dark red, its origin is most probably from the upper part of the bowel (right, transverse, or left colon).
What causes rectal bleeding?
Rectal bleeding can be caused by many conditions, the main ones are the following:
Treatment for rectal bleeding:
Regarding intestinal constipation and hard stool, after a careful examination and if necessary other exams, several diet and lifestyle advice will be given and, if necessary, liquid fiber and laxatives.
When there is a suspect of an intestinal polyp, a complete colonoscopy is mandatory, in order to perform biopsy and to exclude malignant disease.
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are the so-called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The main symptoms are abdominal pain, frequent bowel movements, and a bloody stool. They are serious conditions, but with an accurate diagnosis and proper advanced therapy, excellent results are achieved.
A solitary rectal ulcer is an open sore in the rectum. This disease is still poorly understood but most of the time it is due to a chronic injury to the rectal mucosa like rectal prolapse of chronic constipation. Medical therapy is attempted first, then surgery is pursued when the ulcer is not healing.
