Endoscopy - Dubai Gastroenterology Clinic

In diagnostic endoscopies, we have Upper endoscopy and Colonoscopy.

An upper GI endoscopy is a rubbery non-painful tube that passes through your mouth and reaches the second or third part of the small intestine (duodenum).

It can be done in 2 ways

  • First, while the patient is awake and given only local anesthesia (spray) into the mouth
  • The second way is by sedation (mild to moderate) with the assistance of the general anesthesia Doctor.

Upper GI endoscopy is used to diagnose and treat problems in your upper GI tract or unexplained symptoms such as difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia), heartburn and reflux, bloating and gas distension, etc.

Upper GI endoscopy has minimal side effects which only include a painful throat during introduction which usually subsides in 6-12 hours.

The same idea for colonoscopy where it passes through your anus and reaches up to the terminal ileum and cecum to diagnose symptoms of constipation, diarrhea, bloating and gas distension, bleeding, or mucous with stool.
