Rubber Band Ligation for Hemorrhoids at Gastroenterology Clinic DRHC Dubai

Rubber band ligation is a treatment in which the hemorrhoid is tied off at the base with rubber bands, thus cutting off the hemorrhoid's blood supply. Only internal hemorrhoids are treated with this method. A doctor puts an anoscope (a viewing instrument) into the anus to do this surgery.

Hemorrhoidal Banding:

Hemorrhoids are like pockets that contain swollen blood vessels. Uncomfortable and common but treatable. One of the easy and successful non-surgical treatments is rubber band ligation. The hemorrhoid is clamped at its base to cut-off blood flow. This treatment is for internal hemorrhoids.

When?

  • After the failure of home remedies and medical treatments
  • Increasingly itchy and painful
  • Bleeding
  • 40 years old and If you have a family history of colon cancer, your doctor will perform a complete colon examination before recommending hemorrhoid banding

Preparation:

Tell your doctor about all of your prescribed medications.

If the surgery is done under anesthesia, you must fast for many hours before the procedure. It's a rather simple process, but it's a good idea to have someone drive you home and stay with you for a day or two afterward to assist you around the house. This can help you prevent overstretching, which can lead to problems.

Procedure:

It is generally an outpatient process, which means you won’t need to stay in a hospital.

You'll be given anesthesia or have a topical anesthetic applied to your rectum before the treatment. General anesthesia may be required if the hemorrhoids are really painful.

The doctor will insert an anoscope (a short tube with a light at the end) into your rectum until it reaches the hemorrhoid after you lie down on your left side. The doctor next inserts a ligator, a tiny instrument, into the anoscope. To restrict the blood flow, one or two elastic rubber bands will be placed at the base of the hemorrhoids.

The procedure takes a few minutes in general, although it may take longer if you have multiple hemorrhoids.

After:

After the procedure, it takes usually one to 2 weeks for the ligated hemorrhoids to dry, fall and pass unnoticed in stools.

For a few days after hemorrhoid banding, you may feel:

  • Slight discomfort
  • Gas
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Constipation
  • A stool softener or laxative may be needed. Streaks of blood in stools are normal for a few days (if blood persists or increases you should contact the doctor)

Risk:

  • It is a relatively safe procedure
  • A few rare risks exist, including:
  • Infection
  • Fever and chills
  • Excessive bleeding during bowel movements
  • Problems urinating
  • Recurrent hemorrhoids

It is indicated that you refer to your doctor in such cases

If hemorrhoids persist or recur after several ligations then surgical resection is indicated.
