Laparoscopy / Laparoscopic gastric banding is a surgery to help with weight loss. The surgeon places a band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch to hold food. The band limits the amount of food you can eat by making you feel full after eating small amounts of food.
After surgery, your doctor can adjust the band to make food pass more slowly or quickly through your stomach.
Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is a surgical procedure that involves the placement of an adjustable belt around the upper portion of the stomach using a laparoscope. The band is made of silicone and can be tightened by adding saline to fill the band. The band is connected to a port that is placed under the skin of the abdomen. This port is used to introduce or remove saline into the band.
LAGB restricts the size of the stomach and the amount of food it can hold. It slows the passage of food to the intestine. By doing so, signals to the brain from the gut allow for a sensation of fullness and satiety with the consumption of less food. This signal is sent from a small pouch created by the band in the upper stomach. When the pouch fills, the same signal is sent to the brain that occurred previously when the entire stomach is filled.
A few risks for gastric banding are -
It is a minimally invasive weight-loss procedure where an adjustable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch, limiting food intake and promoting early fullness.
Patients with a BMI of 35 or higher, or BMI of 30+ with obesity-related health problems (such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea), who have not achieved results with diet and exercise, may be candidates.
The surgery is performed laparoscopically (through small incisions), using a camera and specialized instruments. The adjustable band is placed around the stomach, and its tightness can be modified later through a small port under the skin.
Most patients return home the same day or after an overnight stay. Light activities can be resumed within a week, and full recovery usually takes a few weeks with dietary guidance and follow-up adjustments.
Benefits include gradual weight loss, improvement in obesity-related conditions, and adjustability of the band. Risks may include infection, band slippage, erosion, or the need for future revision surgery.
Weight loss varies by individual but most patients can expect to lose around 40–60% of their excess body weight within 1–2 years, provided they follow dietary and lifestyle recommendations.
The band requires periodic adjustments, especially in the first year, to ensure optimal weight loss while avoiding complications. Adjustments are done in the clinic using the access port placed under the skin.
