Corneal Keratoconus - Dubai Eye Clinic

Keratoconus Management:

It is a progressive eye disease of the cornea that leads to thinning and bulging or outward protrusion of the cornea as a cone shape, which often leads to blurry vision.

It can become severe due to progressive thinning of cornea and irregular surface with scarring, that may require corneal transplant (keratoplasty) if not diagnosed early.

Remember that keratoconus is a chronic lifelong disorder that does not fade on its own, instead, the doctor should interfere to stop its progression.

The decision of which procedure will be selected for treatment to stop the progression depends on the stage of keratoconus which is known from the preoperative assessment.

Collagen cross-linking for keratoconus:

Collagen Cross-linking is a procedure that is meant to strengthen the weak and unstable cornea by adding bonds between the collagen fibers in your eye. They work like support beams to help the cornea stay stable.

It is done using the Avedro cross-linking machine as a source of UV rays and hypotonic Riboflavin drops that allow the cornea to better absorb light helping to make the cornea stronger.

After the procedure, the doctor will put contact lenses so it is important not to rub your eyes for a few days. You may have some burning, light sensitivity, and blurred vision which is restored within 1-3 months.

INTACS or Corneal rings:

INTACS are a pair of clear and tiny crescent-shaped implants that are placed into the cornea.

This takes place by making tiny tunnels in your cornea to implant the rings, which in return flattens the corneal surface over time resulting in light rays falling on the retina and hence restoring clear vision.

Corneal Transplantation (Keratoplasty):

Keratoplasties are corneal eye surgeries done to treat dense and big opacities of the cornea which may result from bullous keratopathy, keratoconus, perforated corneal ulcer, previous corneal trauma, and previous surgical repair.

There are many types of keratoplasty depending on the corneal disease.

A corneal detailed exam is needed to diagnose the corneal disease and take a decision on which type will be done. Keratoplasty is done by using a donor cornea which we take from a disease patient who has done his eye donation with the cornea kept in an eye bank. On average, this procedure requires around one hour.

Before the procedure, your doctor will offer either local or general anesthesia depending on your comfort with the procedure. During the procedure, you will not feel any pain but after surgery, you may experience some slight discomfort.

Again, we are reminding you that keratoconus is a progressive vision threatening disease that can be easily diagnosed during your routine eye exam. Hence to avoid major complications and grant keeping your vision clear, we advise you to book a checkup appointment with us.
