Pediatric imaging is very tricky and needs more attention since it involves young patients. Extra care and extra effort are usually demanded when dealing with such procedures. Also in these examinations, a parent or an adult significant other must be with the patient at all times.

In pediatric imaging, ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) must be strictly implemented. It means factors for exposure must be kept at the lowest minimum technique possible and avoid repeating or taking unnecessary images, especially in X-rays & CT-scan. Though MRI and Ultrasound do not use any Ionizing radiation, they must still be regulated strictly.

There are several reasons why these patients are sent to undergo Pediatric Radiology Procedure, some of the most common include:

  • Cough & fever
  • Snoring
  • Noise in breathing
  • Trauma
  • Bone age
  • Slow development
  • Weaknesses
  • Dental purposes
  • Health check-up
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Underdeveloped or with deformity
  • Seizures
  • Stroke in the young

Due to high energy, fear, curiosity, playfulness & inability to follow instructions properly, a parent or an adult significant other is required to stay and to help in giving instructions or help in restraining patients while performing the examination. This is usually applicable to X-ray and Ultrasound scans, when performing CT, sometimes it helps, but in MRI, sedation is mostly required.

Pediatric Imaging with Sedation means giving the patient a medication orally or through injection to help the patient relax and sleep. With this procedure, the pediatric patient will be motionless, and imaging can be done smoothly, providing quality and useful images for better diagnosis.
