Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a non-invasive, radiation free MRI test for many pancreatico-biliary disorders compared to invasive modality ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) . No need to put endoscope inside the patient. High soft tissue contrast in 1.5 T MRI also enable evaluation of the other abdominal visceras.
- Can evaluate congenital variants of the biliary system which could be the cause of biliary diseases like pancreatitis, stones in bile ducts or gall bladder or infection in biliary system.
- Stones in the extrahepatic bile ducts (Choledocholithiasis )
- Infections/inflammation or strictures in the biliary system like Primary sclerosing cholangitis.
- Postoperative biliary complications
- Cholangiocarcinoma
- Pancreatic diseases like pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer ,pancreas divisum.
