Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)
Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a non-invasive, radiation-free MRI test used to diagnose many pancreatico-biliary disorders, providing an alternative to the invasive modality ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography). Unlike ERCP, MRCP does not require the insertion of an endoscope into the patient. The high soft tissue contrast in a 1.5 T MRI also enables the evaluation of other abdominal organs.
MRCP can assess congenital variants of the biliary system, which might cause biliary diseases such as pancreatitis, bile duct or gallbladder stones, or infections in the biliary system. It is useful for detecting conditions such as:
