The exact vaccines recommended for your child should be confirmed by a pediatrician based on age, previous vaccination history, and individual medical circumstances.

What If My Child Has Missed a Vaccination?

If your child has missed one or more scheduled vaccinations, speak with a healthcare provider about catching up.

The DHA handbook advises parents to follow the recommended vaccination schedule and notes that delaying vaccination can increase the period during which a child may remain vulnerable to serious illness.

How to Prepare Your Child for a Vaccination Appointment

Before the Vaccination

The DHA guidance recommends several steps parents can take before the appointment:

• Review the vaccination schedule: Understand which vaccinations your child is expected to receive.
• Bring the immunisation record: Take your child’s vaccination card or other available vaccination records to the appointment.
• Explain the appointment: Talk to your child using simple, age-appropriate language.
• Prepare a comfort plan: A favourite toy or book can help younger children feel more comfortable.
• Choose an appropriate appointment time: When possible, schedule the visit when your child is well-rested and has eaten.

The DHA handbook also advises parents to avoid giving antipyretic medication before vaccination unless otherwise advised by the healthcare provider.

During the Vaccination

• Stay calm and reassuring.
• Use a distraction such as a conversation, a toy, or a video.
• Hold or sit close to your child when appropriate.
• Encourage slow, deep breathing.
• Offer reassurance and praise.

After the Vaccination

After vaccination, parents should monitor their child and keep the vaccination record updated.

The DHA handbook notes that common mild reactions may include:

• Redness at the injection site
• Swelling at the injection site
• Low-grade fever
• Mild tiredness

These mild reactions usually resolve within a short period. Parents can also encourage fluids and rest, and may use a cool, damp cloth if the injection site is sore or swollen.
