Carotid Artery Disease - Neurology Clinic Dubai DRHC

The carotid artery is a major artery carrying oxygenated blood to the brain from the heart. It runs through the neck and then through openings in skull bones, reaching the brain. As age advances and due to some risk factors apart from age, the carotid artery may get blockages due to the deposition of fatty plaques inside its lumen. These blockages, when severe enough, hamper blood supply to the brain and may result in brain ischemia in the form of Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or stroke.

Symptoms include

  • Sudden onset numbness or weakness on one side of the body
  • Sudden onset Blurred vision
  • Sudden onset trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden dizziness or imbalance
  • Sudden severe headache

These symptoms should be regarded as medical emergency and one should seek urgent medical help even if they subside after a few minutes.

Various factors responsible for carotid artery disease include:

  • Age
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • High Cholesterol
  • Smoking/Tobacco use
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Family history
  • Obesity.

Various CT, MRI and ultrasound techniques can help identify carotid artery disease and its extent of stenosis. Depending on this data, Medical and/or surgical treatment can be planned.
