VARICOSE Veins

Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins - Varicose Veins Doctor DRHC Dubai

What is Laser Treatment:

Laser Treatment (EVLT / EVLA) is a minimally invasive endovenous treatment option for the treatment of venous insufficiency and varicose veins. The technique stood the test of time over the last 24 years, being effective and safe.

Previously all patients had to undergo a thorough physical examination and detailed duplex Ultrasound scan/mapping of the leg to find the diseased veins, establish an accurate diagnosis, and plan the procedure individually to the specific needs of each and every patient.

The intention of the laser treatment is to treat and close the incompetent main superficial venous trunks of the leg from the inside. In preparation for the treatment, basic blood tests are checked. Just before the procedure, another ultrasound scan is performed to confirm that it's all good and safe to proceed.

I use the most advanced mono and dual-ring laser fibers to accommodate all different types of varicose veins.

Severe case of Varicose veins with prior spontaneous bleeding episodes:

After the Laser Treatment symptoms have resolved with marked improvement of skin quality and no more bleeding.

How Laser Treatment is performed:

  • While laying flat, local anesthetic is applied and the target vein is cannulated under ultrasound guidance through a tiny incision, approximately 3-4mm.
  • The laser catheter is advanced into the vein under ultrasound guidance up to the source of incompetence, most often to the level of the groin as in picture 2 below. This is pain-free, maybe a sensation of “ something going on” can occur.
  • Laser catheters work by generating heat to destroy vein walls. To prevent surrounding tissues from the heat, a so called “tumescent solution” is injected around the vein. This is normal saline mixed with the local anesthetic Lidocaine. It’s not just a heat sink, but also has a painkiller effect. This part is with some discomfort, but almost all patients are fine with it. In case the pain progresses, we can top it up with IV meds, e.g., Paracetamol, if needed.
  • After the correct position of the laser fiber is confirmed with ultrasound, the laser is activated and the catheter is pulled back at a steady pace along the whole length of the target vein to treat and close it with heat. Minimal warmth and subtle ticking/clicking sensation can be expected.
  • Closing the main trunks, we expect side branches to collapse. If this is not the case, we can target those veins with foam sclerotherapy, later.
  • Sometimes, sclerotherapy or microphlebectomy is performed simultaneously with laser treatment.

During the procedure, you are encouraged to talk and ask anything if concerned.

Laser Treatment recovery:

A compression bandage is applied and almost all patients are ready to walk out of the theater and leave the center shortly afterward. The bandage is changed to compression stockings the next day and advised to wear it during the daytime for approximately a week. You can resume normal daily activities almost immediately after the Laser Treatment.
