Reactive arthritis , is a form of inflammatory arthritis that can affect the joints, eyes, and urinary system. Although reactive arthritis is not contagious, the bacteria that cause it can be passed from person to person.

Our team has is a highly skilled and experienced rheumatologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of reactive arthritis. With his expertise and the state-of-the-art facilities at DRHC Dubai, you can trust that you will receive the highest quality care for your condition.

Causes and risk factors:

Reactive arthritis is usually triggered by an infection, most commonly sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia or gastrointestinal infections like salmonella, shigella, Yersinia, and campylobacter. However, not everyone who gets these infections will develop reactive arthritis. Some people are more at risk due to genetic factors, such as carrying the HLA B27 gene.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of reactive arthritis can vary, but they often include joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, especially in the knees, ankles, and feet. Other symptoms can include redness and swelling in the eyes, urinary symptoms like burning or pain when urinating, and skin rashes.

Diagnosis:

Our Rheumatologist will review your medical history, conduct a physical examination, and order blood tests and urine or stool samples to check for infection or inflammation. He may also perform an arthrocentesis test, which involves extracting joint fluid with a needle to be examined closely.

Treatment options:

Treatment for reactive arthritis depends on the underlying cause. If it is caused by an infection, antibiotics will be prescribed. Other treatments may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to help with pain and inflammation, corticosteroids for more severe symptoms, and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) for long-term management. However, the specific treatment plan will be determined after a thorough consultation with our Rheumatologist.
