Stress Related Disorders - DRHC Dubai Psychiatry Clinic

Stress-related disorders are a group of mental health conditions that are triggered or exacerbated by stress. Stress is a natural response to challenging or threatening situations, but chronic or severe stress can have a negative impact on both physical and mental health. Some common stress-related disorders include:

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD):

PTSD can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event.

Acute stress disorder:

Similar to PTSD, acute stress disorder can occur after a traumatic event and is characterized by symptoms such as dissociation, intrusive thoughts, and avoidance behaviors. However, these symptoms occur for a shorter period than in PTSD.

Adjustment disorders:

These are emotional or behavioral reactions to stressful events or changes in life, such as divorce, job loss, or serious illness. Symptoms may include feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD):

While not always triggered by a specific stressor, GAD is characterized by excessive and persistent worry about a wide range of topics. Physical symptoms such as muscle tension and irritability are also common.

Panic disorder:

Panic disorder involves recurring panic attacks, which are sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort that peak within minutes. These attacks can be triggered by stress or occur unexpectedly.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD):

OCD involves obsessions (unwanted, intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors performed to reduce anxiety). Stress can exacerbate these symptoms.

Depressive disorders:

While not solely caused by stress, stress can contribute to the onset or worsening of depressive disorders such as major depressive disorder or dysthymia.

Somatization disorders:

These are conditions in which a person experiences physical symptoms that are not explained by any underlying medical condition. Stress can play a role in the development or exacerbation of these symptoms.
