Stomach Cancer:

Stomach cancer is the 5th most common cancer worldwide (World Cancer Research)
According to the American Cancer Society estimations for 2023: about 26500 new cases of gastric cancer were diagnosed in the US, which accounts for about 1,5% of all newly diagnosed cancer.
Stomach cancer happened with a mutation in the structure of the cell's DNA which affects how these cells grow, this uncontrollable division produces a gastric mass called a tumor.
These abnormal cells can spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system, especially toward the liver, lungs, and bones. Mainly, digestive tract tumor symptoms are obstruction, bleeding, and perforation.

The main investigation is an endoscopy which gives us sufficient information if there is any gastric mass or abnormality.

Also, an endoscopy allows removing small tissue biopsy for study under a microscope
Less commonly used is an endoscopic ultrasound where the scope has an ultrasound probe at the end.
PET scan, CT scan, and MRI abdomen and chest for more evaluation and tumor staging Diagnostic laparoscopy in a few cases.

Types of Stomach cancer:

  • Adenocarcinoma: most common.
  • Lymphoma.
  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumor GIST.

Treatment for Stomach Cancer:

The stage of a tumor depends on how deeply it grows into the stomach wall and if there is any spread to lymph nodes or other organs by using the TNM staging system.

It is helpful to know all details about your treatment options, and whether this treatment is curative or palliative.
In gastric cancer, the treatment team may consist of a gastroenterologist, an oncology surgeon, a medical oncologist, a radiation oncologist, and an assigned nurse.
Stomach cancer treatment is mainly surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
The treatment team (tumor board) determines whether the case requires a combination of surgery and chemoradiotherapy or not.
Surgical treatment includes: partial or total gastrectomy
Chemo and radiotherapy can be done pre or post-surgery.

Prognosis of Stomach Cancer:
