What happens during the surgery?

  • The surgeon makes use of a minimally invasive technique, where they make 1 or 2 cuts of 2-5 inches in length, then, uses these cuts for moving the hip muscles which are connected to the pelvis and thigh bone to expose the hip joint.
  • Once the joint is exposed, the socket of the hip joint is prepared, and also the femoral canal before inserting the prosthesis. The prosthesis varies between cemented or cementless based on the method of fixation.
  • Then, the articulation is inserted and adjusted, the bearing surfaces can be metal on plastic, ceramic on plastic, or ceramic on ceramic, and the choices are discussed with the patient according to the age, need, and special anatomy in certain difficult cases.

Complication:

Complications have become very minimal with the new advanced techniques. These include infection, bleeding, blood clot, dislocation, or wear of the prosthesis. In general, the rate of complication is 1-2 % and the joints are designed to live for 15-25 years.

Recovery and Rehabilitation Process:

  • The patients are discharged from the hospital within 2 to 4 days and followed up in the clinic and have physiotherapy. The full recovery will take at least 4-6 month's time depending upon the overall health of the patient and the type of surgery performed.

Care at home after hip replacement surgery:

Depending on the surgical approach, the patient will be advised about his posture, we use the anterolateral approach and we advise our patient not to cross legs and not to lay on their side for six weeks to avoid any dislocation.

  • Keep the climbing of stairs to the minimum after the hip replacement surgery.
  • Try to sit in a straight and firm back chair.
  • Don't bend too much after the surgery.
