Types of Sleep Testing - Dubai Sleep Medicine Clinic

What is a sleep study?

To study your sleep we need to monitor and observe some of the physiological changes during sleep. Recent advances in technology have enabled us to introduce our Portable Home-Based Sleep Diagnostics Service – whilst this is predominantly for the diagnosis of Sleep-related breathing Disorders such as OSA. A sleep test is used to discover the causes of sleep disorders and plan your treatment. where a simple sleep monitor equipment will be given to the patient and he will be instructed to connect it before going to sleep and to bring it back the day after to his sleep doctor to review it Ambulatory (Home) Sleep Apnea Tests.

Types of sleep testing:

 1. Overnight sleep test Polysomnography (PSG)

What is Polysomnography? Polysomnogram is an overnight sleep study. A trained sleep technician will prepare you for the test and apply sensors to the head, face, chest, abdomen, and legs. None of these devices hurt, then he will monitor the physiological indicators during sleep including Brain waves, Heart rate, Breathing rate, Oxygen level, Eye movements, and Chin movement.

 2. PSG and Multiple Sleep Latency Testing (MSLT)

This is the established and sensitive test for the diagnosis of Narcolepsy involving testing the degree of sleepiness The patient is placed in a sleep-inducing environment (dark & quiet room) and is instructed to try to sleep. It consists of four or five opportunities (at 2-hour intervals throughout the day) to take a 15- to 20-minute nap.

What happens after the test?

all monitoring devices will be removed, Within 7 days you have to come to the Sleep Disorders Clinic for your follow-up appointment with your Physician. By that time the sleep study results will be thoroughly analyzed, scored, and interpreted by the sleep consultant.
